چکیده

The recent ruling by the FCC has mandated a geo-location database approach to regulate the coexistence of primary and secondary users in TV white space. However, mechanisms for secondary coexistence have been left unspecified and prompts the design and study of the same. In this paper, we propose a mechanism to incentivize fair and efficient secondary user cooperation. Specifically, we assume the existence of cognitive radio equipped secondary users capable of OFDMA with the ability to dynamically exchange subcarriers among themselves. Based on a previously proposed incentive mechanism called Bandwidth Exchange (BE), we further leverage the capability of the mandatory geo-location database to enable fast negotiation between potential cooperation partners to realize a Nash Bargaining Solution (NBS) for secondary coexistence. We illustrate how this mechanism works when secondary users in an OFDMA access network form cooperation through BE for which the NBS is calculated based on information obtained from the database.

A New Dynamic Spectrum Access Algorithm for TV White Space Cognitive Radio Networks

As more user applications emerge for wireless devices, the corresponding amount of traffic is rapidly expanding, with the corollary that ever-greater spectrum capacity is required. Service providers are experiencing deployment blockages due to insufficient bandwidth being available to accommodate such devices. TV White Space (TVWS) represents an opportunity to supplement existing licensed spect...

A Planning Tool for TV White Space Deployments

There have been numerous studies conducted on the availability of TV white spaces in India, which show that white spaces are plentiful. If one needs to harness this spectrum, there is a need for techniques to compute suitable locations where secondary base stations can be placed for providing broadband access. To address this issue, we have come up with a planning tool which determines the best...

Medium Access Control in Cognitive Radio Networks

Cognitive radio (CR) is seen as one of the enabling technologies for realizing a new regulatory spectrum management paradigm, viz. opportunistic spectrum sharing (OSS). In the OSS paradigm, unlicensed users (a.k.a. secondary users) opportunistically operate in fallow licensed spectrum on a non-interference basis to licensed users (a.k.a. incumbent or primary users). Incumbent users have absolut...

Availability Assessment for Secondary Access in TV White Space

In recent years, the rapid growth in wireless data traffic has posed not only unique opportunities but also great challenges for the wireless industry. In order to meet the growing demand without excessive cost or energy consumption, one feasible option for the operators is to acquire more spectrum for wireless communication. Unlike the lengthy allocation process for exclusive spectrum licenses...
